Whilst the nature of companies whose activities constitute R&D (research and development) are wide and varied, they all have a common pattern; they are characterised by a requirement to take risks, to overcome technical uncertainties in the products and process which they seek to improve by experimentation and trialling and they are often unaware that what they are doing qualifies as research and development.
