Bespoke Motorsport Radiators is a manufacturer of motorsport cooling systems based in Leicester and have successfully been awarded R&D tax credits through the service of randd uk. With the aim of rewarding innovation, randd uk submit R&D tax credits claims to HMRC on behalf of UK businesses that are undergoing qualifying research and development activities.
Established in 2009, Bespoke Motorsport Radiators (BMR) is renowned for high quality products, outstanding service and rapid lead times. The company is the UK’s leading manufacturer of high quality performance cooling systems for the motorsport industry.
“Bespoke Motorsport Radiators limited are the UK’s leading manufacturer of high quality performance cooling systems. All of our cores range from classic restoration, NGTC (which is the Next Generation Touring Cars) all the way up to Formula-E, including NASCAR.”
Wayne Howkins, Director at Bespoke Motorsport Radiators
Based in Leicester, BMR offer products and services worldwide such as high performance heat exchangers, cores for aluminium radiators, intercoolers, liquid to air barrels, and oil coolers for motor racing teams. With over thirty years’ experience, the team of highly skilled engineers are able to offer a vast range of products using the latest technology in a state-of the-art manufacturing facility, along with tailored solutions to meet client demands.
BMR have created an extensive range of products such as: ITEC (Internally Turbulated Efficiency Core) intercooler technology for high performance heat transfer by inducing turbulent flow; liquid to air intercoolers for restricted air access which are often used in drag racing; bar and plate cores which are popular overseas and used by NASCAR; and a massive variety of radiator cores and oil cooler cores to suit any application.
The company have their own research and development facility which includes a state-of-the-art in-house furnace. This is a calc controlled atmosphere brazing furnace used to braze aluminium. As Wayne Howkins, Director at Bespoke Motorsport Radiators explains, “this enables us to create battery cooling projects, new intercooling projects, or any other projects that may be required.”
With their R&D department and CNC engineering capabilities, BMR are equipped to make small runs, sample batches and prototypes. Unlike competitors, BMR respond to customer demands by providing high quality, durable products that can be manufactured quickly and efficiently in small volumes. Therefore research and development is needed to sustain customer satisfaction through small print runs and bespoke, high quality products. With customers at the heart of the operation, BMR has undertaken a large number of development projects that have required bespoke solutions through intense trialling and problem solving.
“Being the UK leader of motorsport cooling products, innovation is key. Our customers demand new products day after day. We are continually developing new products to meet our customer’s needs.”
Wayne Howkins, Director at Bespoke Motorsport Radiators
BMR’s latest innovation is the 45 Degree Radiator Core in response to client demands; on many motorsport applications, the standard radiator would be positioned at an angle due to the low slimline design of the front of the car. This not only creates a vast amount of drag, as the air cannot bypass through the core efficiently, but also creates a vortex of air in front of the radiator leading to poor airflow and slower lap times.
One of the main benefits of the BMR 45 core is the radiators’ 45 degree tube and fin set. Positioned at 45 degrees, the airflow can now flow directly through the core creating 100% more efficient cooling, combined with a low fin height to maximise the number of rows of tube and fin.

Wayne Howkins, Director at BMR first heard about R&D tax credits through the company’s Accountant, Watergates who recommended randd uk as a trusted specialist. Like many other business owners, Wayne was sceptical about the scheme but “decided to give it a go as [Watergates] said we’ve got nothing to lose”. Since randd uk work on a contingency basis, a small percentage is deducted once a client has made a successful R&D tax credits claim.
randd uk specialise in R&D tax credits claims and find it takes a straightforward chat of about an hour over a coffee to dispel that common misconception and identify the significant financial benefits for yourself. During the first meeting with the client, Wayne explains that an R&D Consultant from randd uk “sat down with us and realised, ultimately, that we had a claim.”
BMR were thrilled with their Reality Cheque and said that “working with randd was extremely easy… they were very professional” (Wayne, Director at BMR). randd uk’s mission is to reward UK businesses like Bespoke Motorsport Radiators for their innovation and continue their progress in future years.
Wayne explained that “[R&D tax credits] enabled us to purchase the machinery needed to facilitate all of our R&D work. Without randd, this wouldn’t have happened and we wouldn’t be in a position where we are today – being the UK’s leader of the motorsport cooling industry.”
